The story of PostgreSQL is one of the greatest triumphs in software history. Its original creators and core maintainers came of age during the dawn of the personal computer—a time when the machine itself was the frontier. They were 'systems mechanics.' Their romance with technology was born from taming bare metal, optimizing memory allocation, mastering disk I/O, and writing mathematically sound algorithms in C. To them, the database was the product. The ultimate joy was found in lifting the hood and mastering the machine.
But today’s rising generation of developers is fundamentally different. They are 'experience builders.' As digital natives, they view infrastructure as a given utility—much like electricity or running water. They don’t want to build the engine; they want to drive the car. Instead of marveling at the anatomy of a system, they are motivated by outcomes: rapid prototyping, interactive entertainment, generative AI, and global socializing. To them, the database is increasingly an invisible layer tucked behind managed services and auto-tuning tools.
If PostgreSQL is to capture the imagination of tomorrow’s creators, our community must evolve its fundamental narrative. We must transition from pitching, 'Come look at our beautifully tuned engine,' to inviting them with, 'Come use the ultimate canvas to build the future.' This talk explores the demographic shift in PostgreSQL open-source community and offers a new storytelling playbook to ensure the Elephant continues to thrive for the next thirty years.
